The D&RGW was created from the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and the Rio Grande Western Railroad in (?).

The D&RGW reclassified their steam locomotives in (?) to the follwing scheme:
A letter denoting the wheel arrangement of the loco followed by a number specifying the tractive effort of the loco in thousands of pounds. The following classes were used on the D&RGW narrow gauge. C stands for consolidation (2-8-0) and K for mikado (2-8-2).
